Alberta Puffed Wheat Squares

A local treasure to us and to many, there’s nothing like a good puffed wheat square. First created here in Alberta, these chocolatey squares use simple ingredients in a simple recipe, but they deliver big on flavour and a satisfying chewy texture. Add a holiday twist with red and green sprinkles.
2/3 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup cocoa powder
9 cups puffed wheat cereal
- Grease a 9″x13″ baking pan.
- Melt the butter, corn syrup, brown sugar and cocoa powder together in a large saucepan over low heat. Bring the mixture to a boil for 1-2 minutes and remove from heat.
- Add the puffed wheat cereal to your cocoa mixture and stir to combine.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and allow to stand for one hour, then cut into squares.
