Alberta Puffed Wheat Squares

Prep 10M | Stand 1Hr | Enjoy in 1H 10M

A local treasure to us and to many, there’s nothing like a good puffed wheat square. First created here in Alberta, these chocolatey squares use simple ingredients in a simple recipe, but they deliver big on flavour and a satisfying chewy texture. Add a holiday twist with red and green sprinkles.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup unsalted butter

2/3 cup corn syrup

1 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup cocoa powder

9 cups puffed wheat cereal

Directions:

  1. Grease a 9″x13″ baking pan.
  2. Melt the butter, corn syrup, brown sugar and cocoa powder together in a large saucepan over low heat. Bring the mixture to a boil for 1-2 minutes and remove from heat.
  3. Add the puffed wheat cereal to your cocoa mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and allow to stand for one hour, then cut into squares.
  5. Enjoy!
