Breakfasts from Around the World
International breakfasts starring wheat
All around the world, wheat is a breakfast staple! We love our pancakes with maple syrup in Canada, but there are many more sweet and savoury breakfast options made with wheat worth giving a try. Check out these five scrumptious breakfasts enjoyed in different parts of the world—you might just find a new favourite breakfast!
Belgium – Belgian Liege Waffles
Belgian waffles are well known and well loved, but there are actually two different styles! You’ve probably had Brussels style Belgian waffles, which are made using a batter and cooked in a rectangular waffle iron. This recipe for Liege style waffles uses a dough instead of a batter, creating thicker and fluffier waffles which are smaller and usually made in a round waffle iron! Try them out and see which waffle you like best.
Taiwan – Cōng Yóu Bǐng (Scallion Pancake)
In Taiwan, scallion pancakes are a popular street food often eaten as a snack. They’re great for on-the-go and make a delicious breakfast with the addition of an egg! With only four ingredients, you can whip these up and let the dough rest in the fridge overnight before cooking in the morning. Try our version of green onion cakes made on the barbecue or over the campfire too—they’re a perfect camping snack!
Argentina – Medialunas
A typical breakfast in Argentina includes coffee and medialunas. These pastries are similar to a croissant but tend to be smaller and sweeter. Vanilla, honey and lemon zest make these the perfect sweet breakfast or treat. This recipe is a bit more challenging to make, but we’re sure it will be a hit with everyone you’re baking for!
India – Aloo Paratha
If you prefer a savoury breakfast, this breakfast popular in India is the one for you! Aloo paratha is a whole wheat flatbread stuffed with mashed potatoes and seasoned with garam masala and other spices. Mashed veggies like carrots or peas and fresh herbs can also be added into the filling for extra nutrients and fresh flavour. Let the kids help stuff the flatbread to keep them busy on a weekend morning!
The Netherlands – Ontbijtkoek
In the Netherlands, Ontbijtkoek is a common breakfast item—the name even translates to “breakfast cake.” Ontbijtkoek is enjoyed on its own or with butter and is also eaten as an afternoon snack. With spices like ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg, it’s a type of Dutch and Flemish gingerbread and makes a delicious, cozy breakfast treat.
