Where to Buy Alberta Wheat

Wheat kernels and germ and flour, oh my!

It’s not hard to find wheat products made by Alberta farmers in your favourite stores. You just need to know where to look! From more common products like flours to wheat kernels you can mill into your own flour, there are plenty of options to discover Alberta wheat products close to home. Check out the list below and get creating your favourite recipes with wheat.

Your local grocery and bulk food stores

Safeway, Co-op, Save-On-Foods or Real Canadian Superstore—wherever you do your weekly grocery shop, you’ll be able to find wheat products easily and affordably! Get all the flours you need to make your culinary masterpieces, like all-purpose, whole wheat, cake and bread flour. Bulk food stores like the Bulk Barn are also a great resource for getting wheat products. The bonus is getting the exact amount you want! Bulk Barn has hard wheat kernels available, as well as wheat germ and a variety of flours.

Health food stores and online retailers

Your local health food store can help you pick out the right wheat products for what you need, whether cooking or nutritional needs. For example, you may want to increase your thiamin, or vitamin B1, intake, so including more wheat germ in your diet would be beneficial. Or, your diet may need an increase of fibre—wheat bran would do the trick. Either way, your local health food store would be able to help. Alternatively, there are many online health retailers that stock wheat products like CultivatR, Blush Lane Organic Market and Organic Matters.

Farmers’ markets

With hundreds of vendors across the province, you’ll be able to find Alberta wheat products for your dishes at your favourite farmers’ market. Check out Crossroads Market or the Calgary Farmers’ Market in Calgary. If you’re in Edmonton, check out the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market or the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market.

Direct from farmer

Farmers and millers will sell direct—all you have to do is ask! Grainworks Organic Tillers & Millers has a variety of wheat products available, including durum wheat kernels, flour and bran. Find heritage grains at Heritage Harvest, growers out of Strathmore. Mountain View Granary in Olds has flour and whole grains for sale, and the equipment to mill your own flour!

We’re lucky to live somewhere with access to safe, nutritious food all year long! Alberta farmers work hard to bring you the wheat products you know and love. Learn more about the wheat growing process here.

In future, when mentioning farmers’ markets please direct people to AB Approved Farmers’ Markets listings (https://www.alberta.ca/find-an-approved-farmers-market.aspx) rather than identify 4, when there are more than 130 provincially.
