Family-Friendly Hikes in the Rockies

With easy-to-pack meals

There’s no shortage of activities to do in Alberta all year long, but when the lakes start to melt, nothing can beat seeing that turquoise blue glacial water in the mountains! If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids active and occupied this upcoming spring and summer, check out our favourite family-friendly hikes in the Rockies for inspiration. Luckily, life’s simple ingredient (a.k.a. wheat) makes for the perfect ingredient to create easy-to-pack, healthy meals to fuel the whole family for a day of exploring.

Two Jack Lake

If you’re looking for an easy out-and-back hike in Banff, Two Jack Lake is for you! This trail provides stunning views without having to trek a long way to high altitudes, so it’s perfect for the whole family and groups with varying skill levels. An ideal trail for all seasons—bring your snowshoes along in the winter and kayak in the summer to take advantage of our Alberta backyard all year long. Pack up your picnic for when you finish your hike with Spicy Tuna Wraps that are perfect for on the go. Easy to prepare and packed with protein, these wraps are great for refueling after a hike.

Maligne Canyon

This hike is a very heavily trafficked route in Jasper National Park, and for good reason. At just over four kilometres, you don’t have to be a seasoned mountaineer to experience the beautiful views of Maligne Canyon. The best time to visit this trail is April through October but heading there in the winter months can offer spectacular ice views, so long as you’re prepared with crampons or ice cleats. Pack a snack box with these Banana Almond Roll Ups that are great for kids and adults alike! This recipe is easy to make your own based on your family’s preferences—try almond, peanut, cashew or sunflower butter to pair with the wheat tortilla base.

Ribbon Creek, Kovach and Terrace Loop

This loop in the Kananaskis area is sure to be a hit with the whole family. It takes an average of one hour and 41 minutes to complete, so you can even pack this one in on a day with another short hike to get the most out of your drive into the mountains! Make some Trail Mix Energy Cookies to bring alongside your favourite sandwich (we suggest a Classic Club Sandwich with your choice of bread—sourdough, whole wheat, you name it) to keep your energy up all day long. Trail mix energy cookies have a great balance of fat, carbs, protein and fibre to make sure you get through your day of adventuring.

If you’re heading out for a weekend camping trip to spend in the mountains, these packable meals work well and are easy to assemble in your makeshift kitchen outdoors. From s’mores to Bannock, life’s simple ingredient makes for an ideal ingredient to take on your Alberta camping adventures! We’ve got more outdoor-friendly recipes featuring wheat for the whole family to enjoy.

There’s definitely no shortage of trails and amazing views in Alberta. Tie up your running shoes and get out there for some hikes and use life’s simple ingredient to fuel you along the way.
