Five must-try bakeries in Red Deer

Try a local bakery using Canadian wheat today

Central Alberta is home to some of the largest producers of wheat in the province, and luckily for us, there are lots of restaurants and bakeries that enjoy making food with Canadian wheat. Red Deer is home to some of our favourite bakeries in Alberta, including these five that you absolutely must try.

Babycakes Cupcakery

Step into the past and enjoy a sweet treat at Babycakes Cupcakery. With a retro-diner feel and a wide variety of flavours, the whole family will enjoy this local bakeshop specializing in, you guessed it, cupcakes. Our top picks are the Pumpkin Head and Morning Buzz, but no matter your choice, your tastes buds will be happy.

The Donut Mill

Is any road trip along Highway 2 really complete without a stop at this iconic bakery? Long a Gasoline Alley staple, The Donut Mill has been serving up fresh donuts since 1994. You can’t go wrong with any of their donut choices but if you’re looking for something unique, we’ve yet to see anywhere else that offers Chocolate Orange donuts.

Stella Bean Sweets

Located just across the street from city hall, this bakery sees steady traffic and with its ever-changing menu, it’s easy to see why. The charming interior decor will make you feel at ease right away and make you a regular in no time at all. Pop by every Wednesday to see their newly released lineup of fresh baked donuts. Or stop by anytime to sample their almond croissants.

Sweet Capones Italian Bakery

The distinctly Italian inspired eatery will have your mouth watering with their cannolis, macarons and sub sandwiches. If you’re stopping in for lunch, the Godfather Sub is highly recommended by locals, and features homemade meatballs and a secret family sauce. For those of you who are not quite inside the city, there is a second location in Lacombe, and they deliver!

The Tasty Bakery

An old school take on bread and pastries, this bakery has been serving the Red Deer area for over 20 years and is well known for its community involvement. Don’t expect artisanal perfection at The Tasty Bakery, but rather, delicious treats at fair prices that are made with ingredients wholesome ingredients. We recommend trying the cinnamon buns. Trust us, you’ll be thinking about them long after they’ve disappeared.
