Fuel & Fun for Kids… With Wheat!

Nutritious meals and crafts featuring life’s simple ingredient

Life’s simple ingredient, wheat, makes for a fantastic snack and craft option to keep the kiddos busy and fueled all day long. Ensuring your little ones are getting the right nutrients for their growing bodies can be a challenge when picky eating comes into the mix. Luckily with wheat, there are plenty of options to create something delicious and nutritious, so the kids are getting the essential vitamins and minerals they need. As a bonus, wheat makes a great kid-safe ingredient to make crafts with! Try out these recipes and crafts this weekend as a way to keep the kids occupied and fueled up.

Pleasant Pancakes & Paper Mâché

It’s hard to beat a pancake breakfast for the kids—especially when they’re topped with fresh maple syrup and berries! To kick up the nutrition in your weekend pancakes, try swapping out all-purpose flour for whole wheat. Whole wheat flour has additional fibre, vitamins and minerals and makes a delicious stack of hearty pancakes. Fibre is super gut-friendly and helps you feel fuller for longer, so the kids won’t be pestering you for snacks all day long while making their craft: paper mâché seedling pots! As we get closer to spring, we’re ready to get planting. Introducing the kids to gardening early on can help them get a better understanding of where their food comes from and how it grows. Be prepared for spring and get creating these paper mâché seedling pots for your home garden as soon as the warm weather hits.

Sensational Sandwiches & Kid-Safe Slime

Lunch can be a hard meal to throw together in the middle of a busy day but thankfully, sandwiches are a quick and easy way to get the kids fed without spending hours in the kitchen. At the beginning of the week, try making our simple seven ingredient sandwich bread so you know you’ve got bread at the ready when lunchtime rolls around. A great make-ahead sandwich filling is egg salad, and it’s a classic for a reason. With protein and essential vitamins from the eggs, combined with the tasty tang of mustard and Greek yogurt, the kids will be getting the nutrients they need with more than just a bland sandwich. After lunch, make this kid-safe slime to keep the little ones busy without worrying about unsafe ingredients in some traditional slimes. This one’s a big hit!

Sheet Pan Breaded Chicken and Veggies & Springtime Salt Dough Flowers

Flowers, not flours! But also, flour for the breaded sheet pan chicken dinner. Following an afternoon of making springtime salt dough flowers with the kids, creating an elaborate meal just isn’t always in the cards. A one-pan meal is perfect for busy nights and clean up is minimal (score!). For this sheet pan meal, just bread some chicken breasts and add them to a pan with cubed sweet potato and broccoli florets. In just 40 minutes, you have a well-balanced, delicious meal that is suitable for you and the kids alike.
