Homemade Waffle Cones and Local Scoop Spots
Celebrating National Ice Cream Month
You can’t beat a nice cold scoop of ice cream at the end of a hot summer day. Celebrating July’s National Ice Cream Month was a no-brainer for us and making waffle cones from scratch is a great way to get your hands in the flour for the occasion. Not up for making it yourself? Luckily, there are plenty of ice cream shops that are equally as delicious so you can support local business while getting a tasty treat all at the same time.
Homemade Waffle Cones
Step your ice cream game up by making waffle cones from scratch! The big bonus is your house will smell just like an ice cream shop when you’re finished—sweet and delicious. You can whip these up in about 30 minutes, so be sure to have your favourite flavour of ice cream at the ready to create a yummy summer treat. You’ll just need a waffle cone maker and cone mold to make the perfect vessel for your ice cream.
¼ cup egg whites
7 tbsp granulated sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract
⅛ tsp salt
⅔ cup all-purpose flour
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- Preheat a waffle cone maker and lightly brush each side with oil.
- Beat together egg whites, sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl. Add the salt and half of the flour and mix to incorporate. Add melted butter and remaining flour and mix until smooth.
- Spoon two tablespoons of batter on to the waffle cone maker. Close the lid and bake for one minute 30 seconds.
- Remove the waffle from the waffle cone maker (carefully, it’ll be hot!) with a fork on a clean cloth. Roll the waffle around a cone form, pinching the bottom and hold the cone for about ten seconds to set the shape.
If you don’t have a waffle cone maker handy, try making these simple homemade ice cream cones—all with equipment you already have in your kitchen.
