What is wheat germ?

Wheat germ is the protein-rich section of a wheat kernel. When a wheat kernel is planted and grows, it is the wheat germ that eventually turns into the wheat plant! Get the lowdown on wheat germ here.

Most large grocery stores carry wheat germ in the cereal aisle, but you can also find it at most health-food stores.

Ingredients:

2 cups rolled oats

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup wheat germ

3/4 tsp cinnamon

1 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup raisins, craisins or chocolate chips

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup honey

1 egg, beaten

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease a 20 x 30 cm baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt.
  4. Make a hole in the centre and pour in the egg, honey, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands.
  5. Pat the mixture evenly into the greased baking dish.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges.
  7. Cool for 5 minutes and cut into desired serving size. (Don’t wait too long or the bars will become difficult to cut)
