Six hidden gem bakeries in Calgary

Try a local bakery using Canadian wheat today

From Indonesia to Italy, Canadian wheat is enjoyed around the globe. But you don’t have to go far to enjoy life’s simple ingredient—bakers across the province use Canadian wheat to make their sweet and savory delights, you just need to know where to look. Here’s six of our favourite hidden gem bakeries in Calgary.

Bootsma Bakery

We have two words for you…Cheese. Buns. And if you’re looking for Calgary’s best you need to go to Bootsma Bakery. Bootsma is a family-run European inspired bakery dedicated to making fresh baked goods from traditional from scratch recipes with locations in Calgary and Lethbridge. They’re known across the world for their cheese buns, but they offer a variety of fresh baked bread, cakes, cookies and pastries. You don’t want to miss this spot.

Butterblock

Tucked away in the Devenish Building on 17th Ave, Butterblock has been curing Calgary’s croissant cravings since 2017. The bakery offers sweet and savoury croissants, sandwiches, cookies and other baked goods throughout the week, but we recommend stopping in on Tuesday and trying their #testruntuesday deal, where you get $2.50 off their latest creation.

Eclair de Lune

If you like French pastries, Éclair de Lune is the place to go. Offering traditional French pastries, sandwiches and cakes, this north-east bakery is a must visit when you’re craving a treat. Want to try our favourites? We recommend the Lemon Tarts and the Croquant Noisette.

Pie Junkie

Calgary’s Pie Junkie specializes in you guessed it, good ol’ fashioned pie. With three locations across the city, there’s plenty of opportunity to grab a sweet or savoury pie from Calgary’s only proper pie shop. On the sweet side, our pie picks are pumpkin, wild blueberry and maple pecan, and if savoury is your jam we suggest the turkey dinner, brie & pear or the mushroom pot pie.

Sidewalk Citizen

Although, Sidewalk Citizen may not be a hidden, (The bakery has been written about in the Daily Hive, CBC and the Calgary Herald, to name a few) it’s definitely a gem. With incredible dishes and baked goods inspired by Israeli and middle-eastern cuisine and a casual, comfortable vibe, it’s no surprise that Sidewalk Citizen is popular amongst Calgarians and visitors alike. While the menu is diverse, we like to keep it simple with their classic sourdough—try it in a sandwich or with their daily soup.

WOW Bakery

If you’re after Instagram-worthy desserts, we recommend visiting WOW Bakery. WOW Bakery serves up world renowned desserts, with a Korean-Japanese flair. Specializing in decadent cakes and shaved ice dessert bingsu, WOW Bakery brings high-quality ingredients, exceptional flavour and beautiful artistry together under one roof.
